Community Service Learning

Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School has a credit-bearing community Outreach initiative in which all 9th and 10th graders participate. Students work as volunteers once a week at a site in which they learn the value of good work ethics while building a sense of social responsibility. Sites have included but are not limited to nurseries, elementary schools, food pantries, small businesses, community-based organizations, and medical centers.

The program begins in October and ends in June. In September, students attend an orientation and complete “applications” to indicate their site placement preferences, which we try to honor as closely as possible. All sites are in fairly close proximity to our school; students travel to and from their assignments via school bus. Students who are placed within three blocks from the school may easily walk to their site placements.

Please mark your consent belowr. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Ms. Indela Juarbe, community outreach coordinator at (718) 861-0521, ext. #1011.
