Four years ago, in response to community violence, Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School students decided to respond. They created an annual block party where students could play games, make commitments to peace, hear community speakers, and create something positive in their community.

Four years later, the Peace Fair is going strong. It is one of our most beloved and powerful events at Fannie Lou. This year, featured speakers include New York State Assemblyman Marcos A Crespo; South Bronx Activist and founder of Startup South Bronx Majora Carter; CUNY psychology professor Deborah Vietze; and nonprofit director Tiffany Cotto. Students engaged in creating a peace quilt, playing double-dutch, face painting, documenting photographs against LGBTQ hate, and student performances, among other activities. Student Government leaders were also featured on BronxNet for an interview about the student-led event.
